Unearthed #9: Towns

Hello fellow Industrialists and welcome to another exciting installment of Unearthed! When last we met, we talked about Farms and how they fit into your budding industrial empire. As promised, this time we will be discussing the most exciting and advanced feature of Project Automata — Towns!

Autonomy

Towns are the most important part of building your new empire. When you begin the game, towns will be very small, no more than villages really. As the game progresses these towns will begin to grow. Some of this growth can be affected by your actions, but for the most part towns are autonomous.

What do we mean by autonomous? Well, each and every town has a mayor and a town council that make decisions based on a huge number of factors. These factors can include population, environmental, economic prosperity, availability of goods, the player’s standing with the town, and much more.

Town Centers

All of this information is evaluated on a daily basis and decisions are made that will change the needs of the town. Eventually the town will begin proposing and voting on bills. If these bills pass they will be enacted by the town and will be visible in the town’s information panel.

Here are a few examples of some of the bills and how they affect you as a player.

  • Environmental Bill – This can affect your standing with the town, especially if you’re factories are pumping out pollution like crazy.
  • Raise or Lower Taxes Bills – This affects the prosperity of the town and the prices they will pay for your goods.
  • Build or Remove Factories Bills – The town can build factories to provide their citizens with what they need or remove them if you are providing the goods in sufficient quantity.
  • Many more coming soon!

Strategy and Growth

The A.I. that we have developed for the towns is groundbreaking. It is a true, learning intelligence that will adapt to your play style and think up new and inventive ways to make the life of an industrialist quite interesting. But worry not, as most of the decision making process for towns is happening in the background, so you won’t actually see the gears turning, so to speak.

What you will notice is that the town’s needs will change and evolve as they grow and as external factors affect them. This makes for a dynamic and ever evolving economic landscape that you will have to monitor closely if you want to succeed.

Towns will grow into cities and eventually into metropolises. Bigger cities mean bigger needs. Towns also have borders that will grow as the population of the town grows. These borders are areas influenced by the town and the bills they have enacted.
